Alan Ingham was a prolific and much celebrated painter whose vivid depictions of the seasonal beauty of the British landscape are very popular. Born in Skipton in Yorkshire, he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth at the age of thirteen. There he trained and qualified as a hydrographical surveyor, rose through the ranks of the navy to become a Lieutenant Commander and travelled the world mapping the ocean floors. Ingham left the navy in his thirties and became a lecturer in hydrography, and it wasn't until he was in his forties that he had time to indulge his love of painting. He very quickly became a popular and successful artist, and having exhibited at a local level was invited to show his works at some well known venues, including the Mall Galleries in London and the Granby Gallery in Derbyshire. By 1980 Alan’s success as a painter allowed him to retire from lecturing and take up painting full time. He enjoyed continual acclaim and success until his untimely death at the age of seventy. Two books describing his life and work have been published; ‘Savour the Moment’ and ‘Under a Watercolour Sky’, both of which serve as a testament to his love and respect for the great British countryside.
Although prints of Alan’s most popular works are readily available, it is difficult to buy original paintings as many are in private and corporate collections, so we are delighted to be able to offer this watercolour for sale.
The painting is beautifully executed and captures the essence of a cool winter morning perfectly. The lambs playing on a tree stump in the centre of the painting gives it a lovely sense of life.
There is a label on the rear from the Granby Gallery in Bakewell, which I always used to enjoy visiting (a long time ago now), and was one of the places Alan’s paintings were exhibited.
