An unusual George II crossbanded and featherbanded yew-wood veneered kneehole desk, dating from the second quarter of the 18th century. The desk stands on bracket feet and has a quarter veneered top with moulded edge, and an arrangement of drawers beneath with a central recessed cupboard…

An interesting and beautifully made piece of 18th century furniture, which would work as a dressing table as well as a desk. It has a full width top drawer with three narrower drawers at each side, and a central apron drawer with a recessed cupboard below. The cupboard door has a lozenge shape depicted in featherbanding with the centre quarter veneered, and a further line of featherbanding around the perimeter. The drawer fronts have an outer line of stringing, followed by an area of cross banding, with an internal line of feather banding. The drawers are oak lined and have roman numerals carved into the underside to show where they fit. The desk has a beautiful rich colour but is a little paler on top where it has been exposed to sunlight. The handles are of some age and suit the desk well, but are not original.

Condition: Overall the desk is in very good condition and is very solid with everything working as it should, but at around 300 years old there are a few things to mention, as follows: As mentioned above, the handles are not original and the fixing holes for previous handles can be seen, though these have been neatly patched; there is an area of damage to the featherbanding at the bottom of the door; all the locks are present - there is a key in the door lock, which turns, but the latch tends to stick; the back right bracket foot has been replaced completely, and the right hand side piece of the right front foot has been replaced; the moulded edge to the skirted base on the right hand side appears to have been damaged, possibly by damp; there is a piece of timber that has been replaced underneath the desk, probably at the same time as the feet were replaced; there is a localised patch of old woodworm holes on the underneath - we have treated this as a precaution though it doesn't appear to be active; there are general minor surface marks and scuffs throughout; there are some small shrinkage spits to the veneer in places.
