This is an especially striking piece of furniture - the beautifully figured mahogany and highly polished finish combine to superb effect. We were told by the seller that it came from a French doctor’s country house near Sancerre.
Each drawer opens using the key in the lock - there is one key that fits all the locks, and all the locks are functioning. The drawers all open and close easily.
Condition: The chest itself is in good condition other than a few chips to the veneer, mainly on the rails between the drawers, and a few surface marks and scratches. There is an expansion crack to the veneer on the centre of the right hand side, and a lesser crack towards the back edge of the left hand side. The marble top has a repaired crack and has various areas of wear, scratches and scuffs - it is not unattractive though and has a nice worn in look, which in my opinion is preferable to having a new piece of marble cut. I have tried to show these flaws in the photographs, and the damage to the marble top is reflected in the price.
