Buka Island is the second largest island in the Bougainville Region of eastern Papua New Guinea. The tribespeople weave baskets which often feature geometric patterns created by charring the grass, and typically feature a lid that fits into a hole rather than just sitting on top of the basket. They are really beautifully made, incredibly tightly woven, and though sold to visitors/tourists are quite hard to come by in this country, though are more easily found in Australia where they command quite high prices.
We have three of these baskets available - they were purchased from a local lady who spent several years living in PNG in the 70’s/80’s and bought these home with her.
Condition: The basket is in excellent condition, the lid fits well and the handle is solid.

Height - 15cm, or 28cm including the handle.
