Buka Island is the second largest island in the Bougainville Region of eastern Papua New Guinea. The tribespeople weave baskets which often feature geometric patterns created by charring the grass, and typically feature a lid that fits into a hole rather than just sitting on top of the basket. They are really beautifully made, incredibly tightly woven, and though sold to visitors/tourists are quite hard to come by in this country, though are more easily found in Australia where they command quite high prices.
We have three of these baskets available - they were purchased from a local lady who spent several years living in PNG in the 70’s/80’s and bought these home with her.
Condition: The handle while strong and securely fixed does have some movement. Dust has settled into the weave but otherwise the basket is in very good condition and the lid fits well.
Dimensions:
Diameter - 24cm
Height - 16cm, or 31cm including the handle.
