This little chest of drawers is simple in style but has some lovely details. There is a band of satinwood stringing running around the edge of the top, which contrasts beautifully with the mahogany, and running along the bottom of the chest is a band of chequerboard inlay. The oval brass plate handles appear to be original. The three drawers run smoothly and are lined with a blue patterned paper.
There are some marks and scratches to the surface, mainly on the top, as you would expect for an item that’s around 220 years old, and I have tried to show these in the photos. There are couple of circles on the top where it looks as though something has been stood on it for a long time and have left a slightly paler patch - they don’t show up very well in the photos. The only other thing to mention is that on both sides the mahogany veneer has cracked/split low down - we think this is the result of someone dragging the chest rather than lifting it, which has put strain on the legs and damaged the veneer where it covers a join in the structure beneath. This isn’t very obvious unless you look closely - please see the photos.
